The Green Bay Packers may be just over $4 million over the salary cap ahead of the start of the new league season in March, but the team has multiple avenues to clear up considerable cap space and re-sign some departing veterans like starting center Sean Rhyan.

But the team also understands the need to be realistic and let players go who may not be in the team’s direct starting plans this upcoming season.

At this point it seems likely that the Packers will let offensive tackle Rasheed Walker walk and instead give 2024 first round pick Jordan Morgan an opportunity to start in 2026, and prove that he is capable of becoming Green Bay’s future franchise left tackle. And it seems like Quay Walker‘s down year in 2025 may have foiled his chances at getting an extension from the organization.

This is all speculation, and it is totally feasible both could be re-signed to long-term deals in the coming weeks. Yet one player who Packers insider and writer for The Athletic, Matt Schneidman believes will almost certainly not return to Wisconsin is wide receiver Romeo Doubs.

Packers Almost Certain to Lose Leading Wideout

“Romeo Doubs is as good as gone in free agency.” Schneidman wrote in his mailbag piece on February 17.

Schneidman also wrote, in an answer to a separate question concerning compensatory picks, that he expects Doubs, along with Rasheed Walker and backup quarterback Malik Willis to sign “hefty contracts” in free agency.

Doubs has been one of the Packers’ most reliable, if often unspectacular playmakers over the past four seasons in the league since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. And the former Nevada man recorded a career high in receiving yards, 724, which lead the team this past season.

Doubs Unable to Carve Out Starting Role on Packers Offense

Doubs has never really managed to establish himself as a true lead receiver in Green Bay’s offense, which in fairness has become very much a “spread the love” one, rather than focusing on delivering targets to a select few elite receivers.

Fellow wide receiver, Christian Watson, whose contract was also set to expire this March, signed a one year $13.25 million extension last September, which has been seemingly vindicated in light of his excellent performances in the second half of the season that saw him catch 35 passes for 611 yards and 6 touchdowns in 10 games, straight off of suffering a devastating torn ACL in January 2025.

And the team also has lead receiver from 2024, Jayden Reed, under contract through 2026, along with 2025 first round draft pick Matthew Golden. With those three ostensibly ahead of Doubs in the pecking order, it figures that in an era that forces teams to pick and choose who they re-sign, re-upping Doubs does not feel like a necessity.

The “hefty contract” bodes well for both Doubs and Green Bay, suggesting that the team may receive up to something in the range of a fourth round compensatory pick if and when he departs.
