NBA team likely to switch conferences revealed: Two key reasons

The NBA plans to expand to Seattle and Las Vegas, likely moving the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Eastern Conference due to geography and Anthony Edwards' star power.

If Seattle and Las Vegas are getting NBA expansion teams, it's becoming clear which West team should move to the Eastern Conference.

Most league executives believe the Minnesota Timberwolves are the most logical team to switch conferences, according to NBA reporter Evan Sidery.

Minnesota's location, combined with a star like Anthony Edwards helping balance the East, makes the move a sensible choice.

After more than two decades of internal debate, the NBA is finally preparing its first expansion since 2004.

During All‑Star Weekend at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that the league has officially begun laying the groundwork for expansion. Two cities are leading the race: Seattle and Las Vegas.

"We'll make a decision in 2026," Silver said. "Seattle and Las Vegas, in particular, have been very clear. We want to go through the negotiation process, finalize media‑rights agreements, and once that's done, we'll be ready to move forward."

The NBA is expected to vote on domestic expansion this year, while also exploring the possibility of creating a new league in Europe.
