Is Oklahoma State football going to play a spring game? Here’s what we know

Oklahoma State played a spring football game for the first time in a long time in April 2025.

The Orange team defeated the White team, 14-10 in an overcast, rainy spring day as the Cowboys' spring football season started to wind down. There were a couple thousand fans in attendance and they got to go on the field for a meet and greet at the conclusion of the interteam scrimmage.

That was the first spring game for the Cowboys in several years, due to renovations in Boone Pickens Stadium.

New head coach Eric Morris plans to continue the tradition of having a spring game, he revealed at a press conference earlier this month. Morris said that Oklahoma State will have a spring game on Saturday, April 18.

"We want to be physical," Morris said on Feb. 4. "We want you guys to be able to come in there and see us. Obviously I'm not a big secrets guy. We don't do a ton, we game plan quite a bit, and so we'll be pretty vanilla, just trying to get really good at fundamentals and our base things during the course of this spring. So, not all of them will be open, but there will be great opportunities for people to come out and see us build and get behind us."

According to a graphic with Oklahoma State's spring practice schedule, the Cowboys' first of 15 spring practices will be on Monday, March 9. They plan to play a scrimmage on Saturday, March 11, the same day as the Boys From Oklahoma concert in Stillwater.

Morris plans to use spring practices to drum up excitement for his new program.

"We've sold over 1,000 new season tickets already this year," Morris said. "This is a place, for me — the reception has just been phenomenal for me and my family to be out in this community. We've eaten and talked and learned about what makes this place special to so many people in Stillwater and Oklahoma City and Tulsa, even in Texas when I'm down in Dallas, I've met so many people that have ties to this place."

All of this comes after a 1-11 2025 season which led to a complete coaching and front office overhaul. Morris and his coaching staff brought in more than 80 new players to rebuild the roster.

With Morris and plenty of new talented players like quarterback Drew Mestemaker, running back Caleb Hawkins and defensive end James Williams, expectations from Oklahoma State fans and national media have begun to rise.

Several outlets have the Cowboys, who have a combined four wins in the last two seasons, returning to the postseason in 2026.

"Get ready to hear a lot of people tell you Oklahoma State is "the next Indiana" because Eric Morris has come from North Texas and brought the whole dang team with him, but I'm tempering my expectations a little," wrote CBS Sports' Tom Fornelli. "It's not impossible, but considering how bad this team was last year, six wins feels like a significant step forward, particularly when one of your nonconference games is Oregon. Still, in Big 12 play, you avoid BYU and Utah while getting Texas Tech at home."
