Arsenal are said to have an advantage in the race to sign a seasoned midfielder.
Arsenal are said to have a clear advantage as they look to beat Tottenham to the signing of a midfielder who could become available for free. The Gunners are set for an interesting summer window, with no clear direction for the first time in many years, and not in a negative way.
Arsenal have such a strong squad, and one with such incredible depth, that it’s not obvious where they need to strengthen in the summer window. In fact, if the Gunners to want to strengthen, it will likely be a case of being very ruthless in selling a player who is already doing a good job.
There are very few players who have not pulled their weight in one way or another, and if the Gunners strengthen, it will likely be because there is a top option available on a good deal, and that will likely see a player moved on.
One player who fits that category is Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka, who is out of contract with Bayern Munich. According to Football Insider, Bayern are preparing to allow the midfielder to leave the club as they look to restructure their midfield.
The 31-year-old has played a vital role with Bayern since arriving in 2018, becoming a serial winner, but it seems the Bavarian club will not offer him a new deal ahead of the summer. Arsenal are said to be watching the situation with intent having reportedly enquired about a possible deal in January.
Tottenham have also been linked with a move, but it’s claimed Arsenal lead the race due to the fact they can offer Champions League football, and indeed the hope of winning titles. Spurs look likely to miss out on European football altogether, and they look a good couple of years away from being in contention to win trophies.
Beyond that, Spurs don’t even know who their manager will be for next season, and that will give Arsenal an advantage, especially given they are already free to agree a pre-contract ahead of the summer.
