Luis Díaz’s departure from Liverpool was always going to sting, but the way his first season at Bayern Munich has unfolded has only sharpened the focus on what the Reds have lost. The Colombian has hit the ground running in Germany.
In the Bundesliga, he has registered nine goals and nine assists, averaging a direct goal contribution roughly every 75 minutes on the pitch. Overall league numbers of 13 goals and 10 assists highlight a player heavily involved in Bayern’s attacking play rather than just offering flashes of quality.
He has also carried that threat into Europe, scoring three goals and adding an assist across six Champions League outings.
Now speaking in an interview with Sky Germany (via iMiaSanMia), the former Liverpool man explained that he a move to Bayern Munich ultimately made him happy and that the quality of squad in Bavaria also led it to be a good decision to leave Anfield:
“When FC Bayern approached me, it was clear from the very first moment that I wanted to go through with this transfer. It filled me with pride because I had known the club for a long time and basically understood what to expect there.
“It was a good decision – a decision for an incredible and outstanding team. And when you arrive somewhere new, you naturally want to give your very best, to give 100 per cent and to feel comfortable where you are. Being happy is the most important thing for a player and for his family as well. It was exactly the right move to come here.
“I knew I would be joining an incredibly strong group of footballers and a club with excellent infrastructure and top-class training facilities. I had no doubts about that. The most difficult part for me and my family certainly was and still is the language… but I knew I would fit in very well here and that I would contribute my part to the team’s success – just as I did previously in Liverpool. FC Bayern placed their trust in me, and I am trying to repay that trust on the pitch.”
The Premier League winner also revealed that he was aware that Florian Wirtz could have joined Bayern Munich, but his happy he ended up at the Allianz Arena instead:
“There must have been reasons why Florian didn’t come here in the end. Now I’m here, and thank God things turned out this way. I’m very happy and grateful.”
