Todd Boehly could be forced into selling 'untouchable' Chelsea player this summer - opinion

Marc Cucurella has proven to be a crucial member of the Chelsea squad over the last two years, however with his contract set to expire in 2028, Todd Boehly could be forced into a tough decision this summer.

Cucurella picked up an injury against Leeds that is set to see him miss around 3-4 weeks of action at a crucial point of the season.

A hamstring injury is perhaps not a surprise after Cucurella played 70 games across a 12 month period for both club and country.

Todd Boehly’s two-year policy could force him into selling Marc Cucurella

At 27 years of age, there will no doubt be fears at Stamford Bridge that this could be the start of an unfortunate run of muscle problems that could see him become far less reliable.

What Marc Cucurella’s managers have said about him

“He has been phenomenal. Since I came to the club, his level has been high, not only his defending but also as part of our play with the ball.”

Enzo Maresca

“He’s a great professional, a really mature player…”

Luis de la Fuente

“He just came into the team at Brighton, he solved some problems for us in terms of balance on that left side, but his personality is infectious. He is a real good character around the team, he has got fantastic intensity.”

Graham Potter

As per the Mail Online back in March 2025, Chelsea’s owners are insistent that they do not let players enter the last two years of their contract, allowing their market value to drop significantly.

This comes as a result of their first summer in charge of the club, where they saw Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leave for free after not agreeing new deals for them.

Cucurella is likely going to need to enter more contract talks at the end of the season, despite the fact he only just signed an improved deal for the same length of time.

At this point, Chelsea will have to weigh up a number of factors to consider whether they believe it is worth it to keep him at the club.

Cucurella’s wages could be a problem ahead of potential new contract

Cucurella is the fourth-highest earner already at Chelsea (Capology), and an increase on his £175,000 per week would see him pushing the club’s strict wage budget.

Admit it, Chelsea were wrong to sell Renato Veiga 🤔

Especially, with Chelsea trying to sign Jacquet!

The club clearly have faith in Jorrel Hato in that position, and could look to the transfer market again to find competition for the Dutchman if a decision is made on the Spain international.

It has become clear that Cucurella is an essential part of the Chelsea squad, however his absence in the coming weeks will be a great test to see if Hato is up to the task on a regular basis.

If he proves he is, then Boehly and co could be forced into an unpopular decision when the season comes to an end.
