Cleveland Browns News and Rumors 2/18/26: It’s Getting Weird Out There

CLEVELAND, OHIO (TheOBR.com) - Good morning, Cleveland Browns fans!

THE DAILY BLOVIATION

One thing I've learned about the NFL media ecosystem is that it never stops. Whether there's news or not, it keeps going, and generally gets whackier the longer we go without bug stories.

All of which goes to say that today's newswire feeds are a bad sign, since there's still some news, but the let's-make-up-a-trade articles are out there collecting clicks and leading to false narratives and entirely baseless rumors.

More on that in a minute. The key story this morning centers around our beloved left guard, Joel Bitonio, who continues to keep us in suspense about his playing future. The Browns and Bitonio have agreed to push back the void date on his contract from February 16th to the end of the league year in March. This gives the seven-time Pro Bowler more time to decide whether he wants to return for a 13th season or hang up the cleats.

Bitonio has contemplated retirement before, but has fortunately returned. In fact, the 34-year-old was the only member of the Browns' front five to start all 17 games last season, playing on 99.72% of offensive snaps while the rest of the line fell apart around him due to injuries.

Regardless of whether Bitonio returns, pushing back the void date gives both sides time to potentially work out an extension that would soften that cap blow. With Ethan Pocic (Achilles), Wyatt Teller, and Jack Conklin all heading toward free agency, the Browns are already dealing with massive uncertainty up front. If Bitonio sticks around, it gives the Browns an island of stability on a line that will likely feature all-new components elsewhere.

But even that news isn't enough. As I surveyed my newswire feeds this morning, I found speculation out there around the Browns trading for C.J. Stroud (as if we haven't had bad experiences with Texans QB trades before), drafting Ty Simpson or Garrett Nussmeier, and so forth. Trading for Geno Smith appears to be just a suggestion from OBR analyst Pete Smith, but that will eventually pop up out there as soon as someone stumbles across one of our recent videos. Basically, any available quarterback (or even an unavailable but potentially tradeable one) will be tied to the Browns.

Someone also figured out that no NFL team has ever replaced their entire offensive line over an off-season for the last 56 years (I find this hard to believe), so the clickbaiters are out there with their "Bad Browns News for Shedeur Sanders" headlines this morning.

And they say sports journalism is dying. Bah. It's already dead.

IN OTHER NEWS…

PRAISE FOR RUTENBERG: The Browns are getting some validation for their hire of Mike Rutenberg as defensive coordinator. Falcons DC Jeff Ulbrich, who worked with Rutenberg for years with the Jets, gave him a glowing review: "He's one of the best teachers in this league... He understands the back end at a PhD-plus level." Ulbrich said it was inevitable Rutenberg would get a coordinator job, calling him "too good a coach" to be overlooked.

SIMPSON DEBATE: There's going to be a lot of discussion about quarterback Ty Simpson over the next few months. He shows flashes of brilliance, but those moments are counterbalanced by a lack of experience and an injury suffered during the college football playoffs. We're getting things started in Rumor Central. CBS Sports' Mike Renner frames the upcoming debate well in his look at the top draftable players at each position.

UNEXPECTED CAP CASUALTY: The Athletic's Zac Jackson suggests that the Browns might be willing to part with OT Cornelius Lucas as a salary cap casualty. If so, the Browns challenge of rebuilding their offensive line gets even more challenging.

TYREEK HILL: I won't link the article, but there's already speculation in on one of the local aggregator sites that Tyreek Hill should be signed by the Browns. Um, no. Nope. Hard no. Hill is the sort of guy that a team on the cusp of a Super Bowl might sign to help them get over the top, but is exactly wrong for a team like the Browns. He is older, expensive, brings off-field issues, failed his physical and is not a exactly the sort of player that Andrew Berry seems to be looking for. This is an amazingly bad idea. I'm not going to reward this sort of attention-seeking with a link.

DOWN WITH CALEB: I love Caleb Downs, but recent tweets that he's "very much in play" for the Browns are either wholly made up or are a sign that the Browns are really looking to trade down from the #6 position. I think it's too early even for that sort of gameplaying through the press, so I have no idea where this is coming from.

Have a good one! GO BROWNS!

- Mysterious 'Hero' Dog Leads Police Straight to Missing 3-year-old Officer Says in Body Cam Video

Just when you think that dogs can't get any more awesome as a species, they find new ways to express their love and loyalty to human beings, a species that doesn't always seem to return the favor. I see these commercials for the ASPCA and others on TV featuring mistreated dogs all the time tugging at my heartstrings to try to get me to donate money. It works. Every dog deserves a loving home, even the ones with problems. My problem is that I have a hard enough time taking care of my own opinionated bark machine. But there's a part of me that wants to adopt every dog in the shelter.
