Jermaine Pennant named Virgil van Dijk as the best centre-back in Premier League history and John Terry has waded into the debate himself.
The only prize for being considered the best centre-back off all time is ego and bragging rights, but it’s an accolade that matters to both player and fans alike.
While the likes of Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic were all world-class in their day, the game has moved well beyond what their skillsets were suited to.
In the modern game, central defenders are required to have the passing skills of a central midfielder, the pace of a fullback as well as all the traditional attributes of a centre-back.
Van Dijk is the most balanced defender in history and while he’s not just the best Premier League defender on record, there’s a case to be made that he’s better than any central defender ever.
What did Jermaine Pennant say about Virgil van Dijk?
Providing his pick for the greatest Premier League defender ever, Pennant stated: “If I had a choice out of John Terry and Virgil, I’m picking Virgil!”
“We talk about Van Dijk, ‘Oh he’s the greatest center-half ever,’ and then you look back, and you go, hold on a minute, John Terry, Nemanja Vidic, and Rio Ferdinand, like people forget Vincent Kompany,” said O’Hara, before Pennant said: “But I think he is, I think out of all those you named, look at the age of Van Dijk now. Look at the age of Van Dijk.
“You think he’s better than all of them?” asked O’Hara, prompting Pennant to respond: “He’s 34. At 34, Rio was playing at QPR.
“Van Dijk is at Liverpool, playing competitive football, playing in the Champions League, and still scoring… So how can you disrespect Van Dijk like that? He’s still playing at the top of his game.”
John Terry responds
Former Chelsea captain John Terry responded via his TikTok account and called for fans online to settle the debate. Naturally, it’s one of those that will likely be argued and argued over without any real consensus.

The good news for van Dijk – if he even cares about this – is that he is still active and has the chance to improve his case while the rest are retired without any real agency in the debate.
