Spurs' Mason Plumlee deal foreshadows another move to come

On paper, the San Antonio Spurs made a peculiar move Tuesday night, agreeing to sign 13-year veteran Mason Plumlee who most recently played for the Charlotte Hornets.

Plumlee was recovering from a groin injury that required surgery when the Hornets traded him at the deadline to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Thunder waived him not long after, to make room for another acquisition, Jared McCain from the Philadelphia 76ers.

Plumlee now takes a spot on San Antonio's roster that was previously occupied by former top-10 pick Jeremy Sochan.

As a result, San Antonio now has five different centers on their roster. Of course, Victor Wembanyama and Luke Kornet who play the majority of minutes in the frontcourt, along with veterans Kelly Olynyk, Bismack Biyombo and now Plumlee.

There's a chance that San Antonio brought in Plumlee with the thought of replacing one of Olynyk or Biyombo, but used a 10-day contract as a tryout period for Plumlee as they assess his recovery from injury.

If that were the case, of the two, it seems more likely that San Antonio will move on from Biyombo.

Assuming playing time is an accurate indication of favor within the team, Olynyk has made 30 appearances to Biyombo's 14. He also averages 9.5 minutes per game, while Biyombo averages just 5.6.

In those limited minutes, Biyombo is posting the worst stats of his career, averaging fewer than one point and one rebound per game.

Lastly and maybe most importantly, although they will both become free agents next season, Olynyk is on the hook for $13.4 million guaranteed, while Biyombo is owed just $3.6 million guaranteed.

With Plumlee besting Biyombo in every category (throughout their careers) besides blocks per game, it seems all but a foregone conclusion that Biyombo may be released from the team soon.

That said, Plumlee will still have to prove himself healthy in order to earn a guaranteed spot.
