The Seahawks have hired former Northern Illinois Huskies head coach Thomas Hammock to join their coaching staff
The Seattle Seahawks just won Super Bowl LX, but you wouldn’t be able to tell based on the work they have done early on this offseason. After losing offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak to the Las Vegas Raiders, head coach Mike Macdonald has worked quickly to rebuild his coaching staff, and it’s safe to say that things are beginning to come together quite nicely for him.
The biggest item on Macdonald’s to-do list obviously involved finding a replacement for Kubiak, with former San Francisco 49ers run game coordinator and tight ends coach Brian Fleury eventually landing the job. Now, Fleury is beginning to build out his offensive staff, and he managed to get a big name in the college ranks, former Northern Illinois Huskies head coach Thomas Hammock, to join him in Seattle.

Typically, when new coaches are hired in the NFL, guys who have prior experience working together flock towards each other. That wasn’t true this time around for Macdonald, as he tabbed Fleury to be his new offensive coordinator, despite the fact that this duo had never worked together previously. Macdonald did get a firsthand look at Fleury several times, though, as the Seahawks and 49ers face off against each other twice a year.
Fleury is taking on a similar strategy now that he’s working on building out his offensive staff. That led him to Hammock, in what has to be labeled a fairly surprising move. After spending the majority of his coaching career in the world of college football, Hammock will be making a move to the NFL after spending the past seven years working as Northern Illinois’ head coach.
Hammock’s experience as a head coach helped him earn a big role with the Seahawks as part of Fleury’s offensive staff. Not only will Hammock be the team’s running backs coach (which is a role he worked in for five seasons with the Baltimore Ravens), but he also will be working as a senior offensive assistant, meaning he will be one of Fleury’s most trusted assistants as he adjusts to his new role with Seattle.

Seattle’s busy start to the offseason has proven that they aren’t content with winning Super Bowl LX. Losing Kubiak was obviously a tough blow, given how good the offense looked under his lead, but Macdonald has managed to fill the staff with a new group of promising offensive minds who should be able to pick up right where the new Raiders head coach left off.
With Macdonald’s coaching staff coming together, the Seahawks will soon turn their attention to free agency, where they have some key players set to hit the open market. Seattle’s roster construction is going to be crucial when it comes to its hopes of repeating as Super Bowl champions, but if general manager John Schneider and the front office can push the right buttons, this team will likely enter the new season as the favorite to win it all once again.
