John Terry hits back at claims Virgil van Dijk was a better defender

The latest flashpoint in the long‑running “greatest Premier League defender” debate has pitted Chelsea legend John Terry directly against Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

The row ignited on talkSPORT after former Reds winger Jermaine Pennant argued he would take Van Dijk over Terry, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidić, insisting the Dutchman is the best centre‑back the league has seen. Co‑host Jamie O’Hara was left stunned by the claim, repeatedly questioning whether Pennant was serious as the clip quickly went viral on social media.

Terry has now weighed in himself, responding via talkSPORT and on his own channels to tell Pennant to “do your research” and accusing him of getting his facts wrong over Van Dijk’s goal and trophy record. The former England captain pointed to his five Premier League titles, record number of clean sheets and status as the highest‑scoring defender in the competition as reasons he still deserves to sit at the top of the pile

“Jamie O’Hara, who had my back by the way and Jermaine Penant on talkSPORT this afternoon debating who’s better – myself, Rio, Vidic or Virgil Van Dijk,” Terry said in a Tiktok video uploaded on his profile.

“Now this is a debate that everyone’s entitled to their own opinion but ‘Pens’ when you’re on the radio and you’re giving your opinion, you have to get the stats right.”

“There’s only one person who has got the most goals as a defender in Premier League history and that’s me. I also have the most clean sheets in history and if you’re comparing myself and Virgil, then I have more trophies than him as well.”

“Also, you brought up a really good point. At the age of 34, in the season of 2014/15, I played every single minute of every game for Chelsea, winning the league in that season with Mourinho as our manager.

“So guys, this is over to you, I love the debate, I love being amongst it, I’m really proud of what I’ve done in the Premier League, but it’s clearly over to you guys to settle the debate… I’m just happy to be amongst it.”

For Liverpool supporters, the discussion taps into a wider argument about longevity versus peak level. Van Dijk is widely viewed as transformative at Anfield, dragging Jurgen Klopp’s side to Champions League and Premier League glory and setting new standards for modern centre‑backs, but critics like Terry argue he has not yet matched a decade‑plus of dominance at the very top.
