Will Kyrie Irving play this season? Star guard reveals his decision

Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving will miss the rest of the season to fully recover from the torn ACL he suffered last March. Irving said the decision was not easy but necessary, thanking the team, teammates, and fans for their support.

The Dallas Mavericks will be without Kyrie Irving for the rest of the season. According to Shams Charania, the Mavericks star guard will sit out the entire year to fully recover from the torn ACL he suffered last March. Irving is expected to make his comeback in the 2026–27 NBA season.

The decision gives the veteran guard more time to rehab and return at full strength instead of rushing back to the floor. In a team statement, Irving explained his choice:

"This decision wasn't easy, but it's the right one," he said per Marc Stein of The Stein Line. "I am grateful for the Mavericks organization, my teammates and our fans for their continued support throughout the process. I am looking forward to coming back stronger next season. The belief and drive I have inside only grows."

"And I wanted to send a huge shoutout to ALL of my brothers and sisters out there whove torn their ACL or gotten injured doing what they love to do every day. THANK YOU for the inspiration. No fear!"

Irving’s agent, Shetellia Riley Irving, explained the decision to ESPN, saying, "This is about Kyrie being 1000% when he comes back and giving himself the best chance to chase a championship next season."

Irving was one of Dallas main offensive weapons last season. When healthy, he averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists in 50 games.

Without Irving, Dallas is expected to shift its focus. The team is currently 12th in the Western Conference with a 19–35 record. They sit 7.0 games behind the final Play-In spot.
