Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys are entering the NFL offseason with quite a few needs to address. After missing the playoffs during the 2025 season, a sense of urgency has arrived for the franchise.

Last offseason, the Cowboys made a major decision when they traded superstar pass rusher Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. Due to that trade, Dallas has an extra first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and the team has ways to find some financial flexibility.

That being said, the Cowboys and Jones are going to have to get creative to fix all of the issues they currently have.

One potential way to get creative would be by altering quarterback Dak Prescott’s contract. He is owed a lot of money, but just like the Kansas City Chiefs have done with Patrick Mahomes already this offseason, they could save some money by working out a restructured deal with Prescott.

Dallas Cowboys Urged to Make Move with Dak Prescott

According to Over The Cap, Dallas could save $30.96 million by restructuring Prescott’s contract. That move would bring the Cowboys under the cap.

Dallas was strongly advised to make that move by Jerry Trotta of The Landry Hat. Trotta also suggested that both CeeDee Lamb and Tyler Smith are also restructure candidates this offseason.

“The Cowboys really have no choice but to restructure Prescott,” Trotta wrote. “CeeDee Lamb and Tyler Smith are other no-brainer candidates, as doing so would free up a combined $36.63 million.”

By any means necessary, the Cowboys have to open some money to spend. They need to plug quite a few holes this offseason if they want to get back to being a playoff contender for the 2026 NFL season.

Making this move with Prescott would be the biggest step towards getting to a point where they can be a player during NFL free agency.

What Needs Are the Cowboys Facing This Offseason?

There are a few things in particular that stand out as key offseason needs.

First and foremost, the George Pickens situation will need to be figured out. Dallas has made it clear that it would like to bring him back. However, Pickens isn’t going to come cheap.

After the Cowboys figure out what they’re going to do with Pickens, they need a lot of defensive help. Adding pass rushing will be a priority and Jones will also want to address the secondary. There are good players available in both areas, but it won’t be cheap.

Finally, Dallas will also need to make a decision on the running back room.

Jones has a lot of work ahead of him this offseason. The Cowboys are not too far away from being a playoff team, but they’re going to have to get aggressive this offseason if they want to be a Super Bowl contender.
