Artistic pupils give used football helmets a vibrant new life

Alness Academy pupils with one of their transformations, inspired by computer game character Bowser.American football team the Highland Wildcats are working with local schools on a project to make sure some of their old equipment is put to good use.Formerly used helmets have been given to the art departments at Fortrose Academy and Alness Academy by the Inverness-based team, where pupils are recycling them into works of art.Pupils at Fortrose Acasdemy also transformed a number of American football helmets.Wildcats head coach Ben Senior said that the helmets are expensive but only have a 10-year service life and are not recyclable, so the project will prevent them from going to waste.A 'before and after' of one of the designs.The pupils involved have the freedom to be as creative as they like, with the Wildcats planning to showcase the finished designs around Inverness before auctioning them off early next month - proceeds to be split between the schools and the American football team, whose share will go towards buying new equipment.Highland Wildcats head coach Ben Senior with an Alness Academy pupil and their artwork.The transformed football helmets are set to be auctioned off.Giving pupils the chance to get creative and think outside the box, Mr Senior hoped the project would create “fusion between something iconically American and Scottish culture”.The team is working on a similar project with the University of the Highlands and Islands, which it is hoped will bear fruit later in the year.
