Steelers, Vikings, Dolphins named possible destinations for $71 million quarterback

The quarterback market isn't great this offseason, which is bad news for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins.

That's because all three of those teams could dive into the free-agent market for a veteran quarterback this offseason.

For the Steelers, the direction they go will depend upon what happens with Aaron Rodgers, who could retire or choose to play elsewhere.

The Vikings need a veteran signal-caller to push J.J. McCarthy and quite possibly replace him if things don't pan out with the 2024 first-round pick. Rumors suggest it's pretty much a lock Minnesota will add an experienced signal-caller in 2026.

The Dolphins appear set to move on from Tua Tagovailoa, either through trade or releease, and doing so would leave 2025 seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers as the only notable player under contract at the position.

The overwhelming expectation is that Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis will be one of the prized jewels of the free-agent class at the position, and rightly so after he impressed in limited opportunities in Green Bay.

When it comes to possible landing spots for Willis, Zach Kruse of Packers Wire named the Steelers, Dolphins and Vikings.

"The obvious one. The Dolphins are starting over with former Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley and Packers personnel executive Jon-Eric Sullivan, and there's a good chance the two will want to start a new era with a new quarterback," Kruse said. "Who better to chart a new path with Hafley and Sullivan than a former Packers quarterback who proved he's ready for a bigger opportunity over the last two seasons in Green Bay?"

"The rival scenario. The Vikings will be on the hunt for veteran competition at quarterback, and Willis could be an ideal option -- the Packers trained Willis in a similar offense, and the Vikings must add a legit competitor for J.J. McCarthy after a disappointing 2025 season," Kruse said of Minnesota.

"The Rodgers backup plan? The reunion of Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy in Pittsburgh looks likely, but in the event that Rodgers retires or wants to play elsewhere in 2025, signing Willis could be the Steelers' top backup plan at quarterback," Kruse said of the Steelers.

According to Spotrac, Willis' estimated contract is for two years and $71 million.

We continue to believe the Dolphins are the most likely landing spot for Willis. The team's need at quarterback is one reason, but Willis' connections to head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan are another.

Miami might be hitting the reset button in 2026, but adding a 26-year-old quarterback who could be a long-term solution no doubt makes sense.

In Pittsburgh, the Steelers don't have a long-term solution at the position, as the jury is still out on Will Howard. Willis could not only benefit the Steelers in the short term, but in the long term, also.

Meanwhile, the Vikings also don't have a cemented long-term solution. McCarthy might be that guy, but we can't say for sure.

That could lead to Minnesota taking a swing on Willis, and if that happens, we could see the Vikings turn around and trade McCarthy.

If we had to rank these three teams in order in terms of most to least likely to sign Willis, we would go Miami, Pittsburgh and then Minnesota.
