Quin Snyder, Atlanta Hawks, Caleb Houstan
It has been a very up-and-down year for the Atlanta Hawks, who still figure to be a playoff contender for the 2026 season. Moving on from Trae Young and Kristaps Porzingis, they were able to bring in some assets to both help them now, and down the road.
As they have continued with their roster reconstruction, they made another headline this morning. Offseason two-way contract signee Caleb Houstan has agreed to a standard deal with the team. He’ll now be eligible to play in the remaining games, and in the postseason as well.
The roster is currently full, so somebody will need to be cut in order to make room. It would appear likely that one of Gabe Vincent or Keaton Wallace could be let go to make room for the fourth-year forward.
Let’s break down what Houstan’s new deal could mean for Atlanta.
Caleb Houstan Has Contract Converted by Hawks
During his three seasons with the Orlando Magic, Caleb Houstan was known for being a sharpshooter. Floor spacing and three-point shooting were the things he brought to the table.
He showed what he could do in training camp and preseason the Hawks. His game-winning three on the tail end of said preseason helped land him the two-way contract he signed.
Spending the majority of this season with the College Park Skyhawks of the G-League, Houstan has averaged nearly 16 points per game, cashing in 40% of his threes. The shooting he’ll provide alongside of Corey Kispert here could be pivotal.
How about a 14-minute video of Houstan making shots last year for some extra proof? A player that can really get hot, this is somebody Atlanta will enjoy having around.
Consistent minutes have been hard to come by for the fourth-year forward during his career. When he has been out there though, he’s been able to get things going.
Houstan has only logged time in 10 games for Atlanta this year, who has gone to a number of their other options first. The news of the contract conversion certainly provides them with a secret weapon of sorts, should they opt to start tossing him into the rotation.
With career-highs of 25 points and seven made threes in a game, it’s just the opportunity that’s missing for this guy here.
Setting Expectations for Caleb Houstan on Standard Deal
It remains unlikely that Caleb Houstan will come into Atlanta now and light the league on fire. Jalen Johnson is doing well as the alpha here, with Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Dyson Daniels, and Onyeka Okongwu adding extensive contributions. CJ McCollum has been getting it done of late, and the depth has been on display.
Houstan will add them with another shooter. If a rest day is needed for a regular or if a wing goes down, he’ll be the first one to jump into the rotation. The G-League reps, if anything, have improved his confidence from where it was previously.
Playing a fourth season in the league now, he knows where he stands and how to come in and contribute. The forward position gets a little deeper. And now, Corey Kispert will have a guy to have some fun shooting contests in practice with.
We’ll see who the Hawks ultimately waive to make room, but Houstan should be good to go starting with the team’s next game tomorrow. Here we go.
