Dominik Szoboszlai and 5 other Liverpool contract priorities after Ibrahima Konate

With Ibrahima Konate into the final months of his deal at Liverpool, we rank the next most urgent contract priorities.

Talks are ongoing between Konate’s representatives and the club as he speeds towards the expiration of his current contract, a situation that also befalls Andy Robertson.

The pair are the current priorities due to having only a number of months contracted to the club, but Liverpool cannot afford to take their eyes off who is next in line for a new deal.

There cannot be a repeat of the Trent Alexander-Arnold saga.

With a further 12 first-team players out of contract by either 2027 or 2028, we rank the next most urgent priorities.

Dominik Szoboszlai – Exp. 2028

Talks are underway, but the Hungarian has insisted it is “not in my hands” as he awaits the “right offer,” though he has stressed he loves the club.

Liverpool have to do all they can to keep Szoboszlai’s eyes from straying elsewhere, and that can be avoided by not tabling an underwhelming contract.

The club will have certain parameters and will likely highly incentivise any offer, but tying him up to a deal beyond 2028 is the next priority, even if others have less time left on their current deal.

Szoboszlai has the qualities of a future captain, has outperformed his goals and assists season on season, is an integral cog, and at 25 is still in his peak years.

Our verdict: Sign him up, pronto. There’s a wage structure to consider, but Szoboszlai leads the next wave of ‘stars’.

Curtis Jones – Exp. 2027

Has been linked to Tottenham and Inter over the last seven months and will be in the final year of his deal in the summer.

Liverpool have invested heavily in his development and at 25 is now in his prime years, not to mention he is a local representative on the pitch, which is important to preserve.

You can understand his personal desire to play more regularly, but Liverpool cannot afford to lose a versatile and committed member of the squad, and their offer will likely have to reflect that.

Our verdict: Local, homegrown, loves the club and represents its values, these qualities do not come around often. Make him feel valued and extend his deal; he shouldn’t be considered for sale.

Alisson – Exp. 2027*

Alisson‘s contract includes an option to extend by a further year this summer, which would see his deal run until the summer of 2027.

Liverpool have yet to officially trigger the extension, but it is expected to be a foregone conclusion as it gives the club the option of keeping him or guaranteeing a fee in the summer.

While there have been some noticeable changes to Alisson‘s performance levels, he remains invaluable to Liverpool and a more reliable option than Mamardashvili, at present.

Our verdict: Trigger the one-year extension and re-evaluate midway into next season, at which point Alisson will be 34 and Mamardashvili ought to be emerging.

Virgil van Dijk – Exp. 2027

Signing a two-year deal simply pushed the conversation about his future further down the road, with it soon to be back on the agenda as the deal he recently signed ends next summer.

He turns 35 in the summer but remains invaluable and immoveable at the centre of defence, with his availability a key asset that many younger than him cannot replicate.

It feels wrong to even think of a future without Van Dijk, but in Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni Liverpool have at least started to plant the seeds.

His leadership and capabilities remain unmatched and tentative discussions will need to start after the World Cup as to how both parties see their future for 2027/28 and beyond.

Our verdict: Reassess midway through next season, does he want to push on and, more importantly, is he capable of still being a regular starter? Unlike Mo Salah, you could see Van Dijk play out his contract, whether the current one is his last or not.

Ryan Gravenberch – Exp. 2028

Gravenberch was the success story of Arne Slot‘s first season in charge, but has shown signs that he needs competition in the position and a player he can effectively rotate with to keep him firing.

He will be 24 at the start of next season and that leaves plenty of years of potential for Liverpool to tap into, though any new terms will need to be reflective of his status in the side.

With three key midfielders all seeing their contracts expire in 2028, each will be waiting to see how the club values the others before committing, which makes it all the more important Liverpool do not allow conversations to drag on.

Our verdict: Reward Gravenberch’s transformation and the future years he can give the club. Don’t stall.

Alexis Mac Allister – Exp. 2028

Alexis Mac Allister‘s father and agent Carlos has said that they are “waiting for an offer” from Liverpool, which could indicate the club’s stance.

The Argentine turned 27 on Boxing Day and is in a different position to Szoboszlai and Gravenberch for that reason, with the club likely to be considering their options.

Much like Luis Diaz, they could see this summer as their last opportunity to cash in on Mac Allister before he enters the final year of his deal.

He is still preferred over the likes of Jones, which is a nod to his importance, but if the demands of club and country are showing a toll, there’s a decision to be made.

Our verdict: Liverpool must clarify the plan, stick or twist. A new contract would take him into his 30s, but it could protect his value if not left to the final year.
