NFL insider reveals trade update on Dolphins' $73 million safety

The Miami Dolphins have been gearing up to make major changes this offseason. They've added a new head coach in Jeff Hafley and a general manager in Jon-Eric Sullivan.

That duo has already gotten started changing the roster, cutting Tyreek Hill, Bradley Chubb, James Daniels, and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, saving roughly $60 million.

And now, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Dolphins are having trade talks about their $73 million safety, Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Dolphins having trade talks on Minkah Fitzpatrick

"Sources: The Dolphins have had trade talks with teams regarding 5x Pro Bowl S Minkah Fitzpatrick," Schultz reports.

Following the release of the four veterans, the Dolphins' rebuild is already underway. While the Tua Tagovailoa decision might be the biggest one yet to occur, Fitzpatrick's future is also of note for the Dolphins.

He's in the middle of a $73 million contract, but he is heading into the final year of that deal. He has an $18.8 million cap hit in 2026, one that can be significantly lowered this offseason with a trade.

If Miami trades Fitzpatrick, according to Over The Cap, they will take on $12.9 million in dead cap space and save just $5.8 million if this trade is made before June 1st.

But, if they make this deal after June 1st, the Dolphins would save $15.6 million in cap space while eating just $3.2 million in dead cap space.

Moving on from Fitzpatrick for draft capital would be a good way for the Dolphins rebuild under Halfley and Sullivan to begin.

While they couldn't get anything in return for Chubb or Hill, Fitzpatrick is the kind of player that the Dolphins could get something decent in return for.

The 29-year-old safety won't be bringing back a high draft pick or a lot of capital, but some team might be willing to spend decent resources on him that would give Miami's front office some extra ammo to work with going into the future.

It's a full-scale rebuild in Miami, and a lot of the veterans on the roster, likely aside from De'Von Achane and Jaylen Waddle, might be traded in the coming months.
