Green Bay Packers named best fit for former 1st round cornerback in free agency

The Green Bay Packers may not have much salary cap space at the moment, but there will undoubtedly be several moves made to free up some funds so that they can dabble a bit in free agency. In 2024, the Packers spent significant money in free agency by signing running back Josh Jacobs and safety Xavier McKinney. Last year, they again spent a large sum on left tackle Aaron Banks and cornerback Nate Hobbs.

Jacobs and McKinney, of course, were highly successful signings. They both made the Pro Bowl in their first seasons with the Packers and were major contributors to the team last year as well. Unfortunately, though, Banks and Hobbs were not nearly as successful, and both performed well-below expectations while also battling numerous injuries.

Due, in part, to their shortcomings, the Packers again find themselves needing to address their respective position groups in free agency.

In a recent ranking of the top 50 impending NFL free agents, the Packers are listed as the best fit of a player who would help them at one of these groups. Greg Newsome II, a former Cleveland Browns first round pick, could really help provide some much needed depth to the secondary:

“The Packers’ cornerbacks struggled after Micah Parsons‘injury limited the pass rush, and new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon will install a zone-heavy scheme. That’s a fit for Newsome, who uses his backfield vision in coverage. Re-signing with the Jaguars is also an option.”

As noted, Green Bay has a new defensive coordinator in Jonathan Gannon, and he is known for developing his defensive scheme to the strengths of his players. Should Newsome be signed by the Packers, Gannon would, as noted, likely use a zone scheme to benefit him and Green Bay’s other cornerbacks.

It should be noted, though, that Newsome has allowed a passer rating over 100 when targeted in each of the past two seasons. While he may be better with the Packers’ new system, there are no guarantees.
