Real Madrid’s match against Benfica last night was suspended for 10 minutes after Madrid player Vinicius Junior was allegedly subjected to racial abuse.
Football body UEFA announced it is investigating the allegations.
Vinicius went to the referee to claim he had been racially abused by Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni. He later declared on social media that “racists are cowards”.
Prestianni has denied making a racist remark, while Benfica’s head coach Jose Mourinho has been strongly criticised for appearing to imply that Vinicius had provoked the alleged abuse with his goal celebration.
The anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out has accused Benfica and Mourinho of gaslighting over their response to Vincius Junior’s allegations.
We spoke to the charity’s chair Sanjay Bhandari and asked what he thought of the response from Mourinho and the club.
