The month of February has been a rough one for the New England Patriots and their fans. Not only did the team come up short in Super Bowl LX against the Seattle Seahawks, but their longtime head coach, Bill Belichick, was surprisingly not granted entry to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on his first try.
Belichick's snub has caught the entire NFL world by surprise, and many folks have not been shy in voicing their displeasure with the voting committee's decision. That group now includes former All-Pro quarterback Tony Romo, who believes Belichick's Hall of Fame snub "just isn't right."
“I think it’s ridiculous with Bill Belichick – it’s wrong,” Romo said in an interview with R.org. “There’s nobody I can think of, a coach who’s more worthy to be a first-ballot Hall of Famer than Bill Belichick. We’re talking Vince Lombardi levels. That’s where this guy is at.
The stuff he knows, the history – nobody loves the sport more, appreciates it more, or has won more. It doesn’t make sense. Football is a meritocracy. You earn it, you get it, and this just isn’t right.”
It's tough to look at Belichick's career, which is headlined by eight Super Bowl victories and 333 total wins during his time as the Patriots head coach, and say he isn't a Hall of Famer. There's no doubt that Belichick will be inducted into the Hall eventually, but Romo is right in saying that his snub is still a glaring mistake.
