Former North Carolina basketball star Doug Moe, who went on to be a head coach in the NBA, has died. He was 87.
Moe died on Tuesday, the Denver Nuggets [announced](https://x.com/nuggets/status/2023845439787987426?s=20).
“The Denver Nuggets organization was devastated to learn of the passing of legendary coach Doug Moe,” the Nuggets said in a statement. “Coach Moe was a one of a kind leader and person who spearheaded one of the most successful and exciting decades in Nuggets history.
“He will forever be loved and remembered by Nuggets fans, and his banner commemorating his 432 career victories as head coach will hang in the rafters to forever honor his incredible legacy.”
In addition to the Nuggets, Doug Moe was also the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and Philadelphia 76ers during his career.
He compiled a 628-529 record, earning NBA Coach of the Year honors in 1988.
“The NBA mourns the passing of Doug Moe, a pioneering coach whose vision and influence helped shape the modern game,” the NBA [posted on X](https://x.com/NBA/status/2023898447330300335?s=20). “An early advocate of a fast, wide-open style of play, he won more than 600 games as head coach of the Nuggets, Spurs and 76ers, earned NBA Coach of the Year honors and later received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award for his lasting impact on the profession.
“Before turning to coaching, Doug was an ABA All-Star and champion. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
As a player, Moe was an All-American his final season at North Carolina after averaging 20.4 points per game. He went on to be one of the best players in the ABA, earning All-Star honors three times.
