The Philadelphia 76ers don't have a positive update for Joel Embiid coming out of the NBA All-Star break.
According to a team official, the veteran center will miss Thursday's game against the Atlanta Hawks. His status beyond that remains in question. The team plans to reevaluate him once again before the weekend slate.
The Latest on Joel Embiid's Injury
Lately, Embiid has been dealing with a minor knee-related setback. This week, he reported soreness in his right shin. The big man consulted with doctors and has been receiving daily treatment while progressing with his on-court work, strength, and conditioning.
While the Sixers aren't putting a timeline on his return, it seems they aren't going to rule out a return this week. However, his status is certainly unclear coming out of the break.
Heading into the All-Star break, Embiid missed two games in a row. The February 9 matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers came after two 30-plus-minute showings in a row. Without Embiid, the Sixers lost 135-118.
In the final game before the break, the Sixers were dominated by the New York Knicks with a 138-89 loss. That was the first time Embiid missed two games in a row since mid-December.
While Embiid has looked much better this season, compared to his 19-game run last year, the veteran center still has long-term questions regarding his health. After undergoing multiple surgeries in under two years, Embiid is remaining extremely cautious this season, as getting a healthy playoff run in is his top priority.
In 31 games, Embiid has averaged 31 minutes of playing time. The veteran center has posted averages of 26.6. points, 7.6 rebounds, and 3.9 assists. The Sixers are 19-12 when he's healthy.
After Thursday's action against the Hawks, Embiid and the Sixers have a back-to-back set, beginning on Saturday against the New Orleans Pelicans. The two-game stretch concludes on the road against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
