Arsenal’s title push stalled in 2-2 stalemate at Wolves

Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by rock-bottom Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League at Molineux on Wednesday night.

The visitors got off to a fast start as they took the lead inside the opening five minutes of the game, as Bukayo Saka got onto Declan Rice’s cross, and the Englishman ended his 15-match goal drought with a header.

Minutes later, Rice made his way towards the Wolves box and tried to pick out the bottom corner, but his effort went wide.

In the 17th minute, Arsenal were close to doubling their advantage when Noni Madueke’s effort was parried by José Sá into the path of Gabriel Martinelli, but the Brazilian missed the target from six yards out.

Moments later, Madueke got onto Martinelli’s cross at the back post, but his header flew wide.

Just before the break, Wolves got their first opportunity of the night as Andre tried his luck from range, but he skied his effort.

Shortly after the restart, Adam Armstrong had his sights on goal from a distance, but his effort went well over David Raya’s bar.

In the 56th minute, Piero Hincapie doubled the Gunners’ lead with a chipped effort over Sa, and after a VAR check, the goal was given.

Five minutes later, Hugo Bueno pulled one back for the host as he picked out the far corner with a beauty.

Moments later, the visitors could’ve restored their two-goal advantage when Tchatchoua gave the ball away to Gabriel Jesus, who found Martinelli, only to be denied by the feet of Sa.

Deep into stoppage time, Arsenal surrendered a two-goal lead when Raya spilt Mateus Mane’s cross after colliding with Gabriel Magalhaes, and Tom Edozie smashed the ball goalwards only for Riccardo Calafiori to turn the ball into his own net.

Manchester City play Newcastle United on Saturday night, with a chance to close the gap to Arsenal to just two points. The Gunners are next in action on Sunday when they play Tottenham in the north London derby.
