Neal Dahlen, Former 49ers and Broncos Executive with Seven Super Bowl Rings, Dies at 85
Dahlen’s remarkable career placed him among the most successful personnel men in league history. He is tied with Tom Brady for the second-most Super Bowl wins (7), trailing only Bill Belichick’s eight.
A Championship Legacy Across Two Franchises
Dahlen was a key figure in two of the NFL’s greatest dynasties:
San Francisco 49ers (1980s–1990s): Dahlen spent over a decade with the organization during their dominant run under Bill Walsh and George Seifert. He was part of five Super Bowl victories:Super Bowl XVI (1981)
Super Bowl XIX (1984)
Super Bowl XXIII (1988)
Super Bowl XXIV (1989)
Super Bowl XXIX (1994)
Denver Broncos (late 1990s–early 2000s): Dahlen joined Denver and played a vital role in their back-to-back championships:Super Bowl XXXII (1997)
Super Bowl XXXIII (1998)
He later served as the Broncos’ general manager from 1999 to 2001, helping guide the team through the post-John Elway transition.

The Broncos released a statement honoring Dahlen:
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Neal Dahlen. Neal was a respected football executive whose contributions helped shape two of the most successful eras in NFL history. He will be remembered for his football knowledge, professionalism, and dedication to the game. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Dahlen’s 7-0 record in Super Bowls remains one of the most impressive undefeated streaks in championship games, underscoring his role in building and sustaining winning organizations.
A Quiet but Impactful Career
Unlike high-profile coaches or general managers, Dahlen worked largely behind the scenes in personnel and scouting roles. His ability to identify talent, evaluate players, and contribute to roster construction helped create championship-caliber teams in two different systems.
He retired from football after his time as Broncos GM and lived quietly in retirement. His death marks the passing of one of the NFL’s true behind-the-scenes architects of success.
The NFL community mourns the loss of a man who helped deliver seven Lombardi Trophies. Rest in peace, Neal Dahlen.
