Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James believes the Golden State Warriors made the right move at the trade deadline, calling Kristaps Porziņģis a “perfect fit” for Steve Kerr’s system as the franchise reshapes its roster around size, spacing and versatility.
Speaking on his Mind the Game podcast with co-host Steve Nash, James offered a detailed breakdown of Golden State’s decision to swap Jonathan Kuminga and Buddy Hield for Porziņģis, framing the move as both inevitable and stylistically aligned with how the Warriors want to play.
“Health is wealth,” James said. “And obviously Kristaps is definitely a perfect fit for Golden State—the way they play, their style of play, it’s a perfect fit. Obviously, his health is the most important thing.”
LeBron Says Kuminga Exit Was ‘Only a Matter of Time’
James acknowledged the turbulence surrounding Kuminga’s tenure in Golden State, suggesting the separation had been trending in that direction long before the deal materialized.
“When it comes to all of that, we know the saga, the drama—whatever you want to call it—with the whole Kuminga situation in Golden State,” James said. “I think it was only a matter of time before they found him a new home. He’s a super talented kid. We all know that—his athletic ability speaks for itself.”
James also pointed to the loss of Hield as a meaningful shift, given how cleanly the sharpshooter fit into Golden State’s pace-and-space identity.
“Losing Buddy had to be tough—his speed, the way he plays, his shooting ability—all of that fit perfectly with what Golden State has been doing over the last year and a half,” James said.
Still, James viewed the reset as beneficial on both sides.
“I think Kuminga wanted a new destination, Golden State gave him that new destination, and Porziņģis is a perfect fit for Golden State,” he added. “It’s always about health with Kristaps. Hopefully, we see him out there.”
Steve Kerr Details How Warriors Will Use Porziņģis
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr echoed James’ assessment, emphasizing that Porziņģis’ skill set allows Golden State to adjust without abandoning its offensive principles.
“He’s an easy fit,” Kerr said via ESPN’s Anthony Slater after Porziņģis participated in practice Tuesday. “You don’t have to change a whole lot.”
Kerr highlighted Porziņģis’ value as a post scorer against switches—an area Golden State has leaned into more frequently this season.
“He provides post-ups,” Kerr said. “You throw him the ball at the foul line, the elbows, even the low block—he can score in those spots.”
The Warriors have ranked near the top of the league in post touches this season, a figure previously skewed by actions designed for Jimmy Butler III as a facilitator. With Porziņģis, Kerr acknowledged the spacing remains familiar, even if the emphasis shifts.
“It’s a little different than the spacing around Jimmy,” Kerr said. “Jimmy attacked the paint and kicked out. Kristaps is more of a scorer and shooter from isolation spots. But the concepts are similar.”
Warriors Adjusting Spacing to Maximize Porziņģis
Golden State has already begun tailoring its offense to Porziņģis’ strengths.
“We worked on our spacing around him,” Kerr said. “We have to recognize mismatches, and everybody has to understand the spacing.”
Veteran guard De’Anthony Melton described Porziņģis as a unique defensive problem, likening his impact to that of San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama.
“He’s a matchup nightmare for a lot of teams,” Melton said, per The Athletic’s Nick Friedell. “That kind of size and skill changes how teams have to defend you.”

James’ public endorsement of the Porziņģis move also intersects with a broader league subplot involving Golden State’s long-term appeal.
According to California Post’s Melissa Rohlin, there is “definitely some level of mutual interest” between James and the Warriors, a report that adds intrigue as the franchise looks toward the offseason.
The report underscores that Golden State’s system, roster construction, and championship infrastructure continue to resonate with elite veterans around the league.
Health Remains the Final Variable
Porziņģis has yet to make his Warriors debut after arriving while recovering from Achilles tendinitis that sidelined him for 13 consecutive games before the trade. Golden State has taken a cautious approach, prioritizing long-term availability.
If Porziņģis returns healthy, both James and Kerr believe the Warriors may have unlocked an ideal frontcourt piece—one capable of stretching defenses vertically and horizontally in ways few centers can.
As James summed it up, the basketball fit is obvious. Everything else hinges on health—and timing.
