Liverpool have explored the possibility of signing Wolves talent Mateus Mane, but he’s also an option for Manchester United.
The Reds’ transfer policy has begun to shift in recent windows, with much more focus on signing young talent.
We saw this in January when a few Academy players were signed, and £60m was spent on 20-year-old Jeremy Jacquet.
Another rising star who could be on the agenda for the Merseyside outfit this summer is Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Mateus Mane.
Mane has been linked to Liverpool this season already, but they could now face competition from Manchester United.
Manchester United now linked to Mateus Mane
Speaking to TeamTalk, Dean Jones has now said that the Wolves gem is an interesting option for the Red Devils.
He stated: “Mateus Mane is being linked to United and I have had quite interesting reports on this one because people close to the club admit he is an interesting option and that his profile does make sense.
“He obviously has a sense of versatility for the attack and midfield, but he also has potential to grow into a star.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
“When we consider what they want to do in the summer, he would be quite a good player to go for because he is the kind of progressive talent they want to invest in.
“We all know they are looking at signing well-established stars from within the Premier League, but they would like to start signing players like this too.
“The fact that he could provide cover in various positions across the side means the stories linking him to United for the summer are worth paying some attention to.”
FSG need to be more proactive in transfer market
Wolves have, of course, endured a dire Premier League season so far, but the 18-year-old has still managed two goals and two assists in 16 matches.
A natural striker, the teenager has been used in a variety of positions this season, including central midfielder, right wing and number 10.
He’s clearly a bright talent, and when Mane played against Liverpool late last year, he received high praise from Rob Edwards.
Edwards said: “Mane I thought was excellent throughout the game, so him moving inside then caused them a lot of problems, and we found him a lot in between the lines, and he was able to create.
“I thought his energy was brilliant, his running was brilliant, but he was brave; he took the ball; he was a real shining light in what was obviously a difficult period for the club at the moment.
“He took risks, he had shots, he dribbled, he turned and played forward. But not only that, he showed real desire to run and fight as well.”
However, now Man Utd could be an option for the player, it’s imperative that Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards do not take a casual approach to the target.
We have already seen Marc Guehi move elsewhere this year, and it’s become a pretty common sight to see linked players, including Guehi and Antoine Semenyo, join other sides despite Liverpool being in for them.
Liverpool should be the more attractive option for Mane right now, but that does not mean the Reds can be lacklustre in their approach.
The Wolves ace would be a brilliant signing for the future, and the Reds need to be doing everything in their power to step up their interest and get a deal done before Utd.
