Mo Salah has been looking back to his best recently, although a Liverpool exit is still on the cards.
Mohamed Salah’s season probably hasn’t gone quite the way that he expected after breaking multiple records for Liverpool last season.
The 33-year old produced, one of, if not the best, individual season in the Premier League’s history on the Reds’ way to the title, but struggled to get up to speed almost from the first whistle after extending his contract. A falling out with Arne Slot seemed to accelerate his departure from Anfield, however, after returning from the African Cup of Nations, he has looked like a new man.
Is Mo Salah heading to Saudi Arabia?
According to James Pearce of The Athletic though, this hasn’t stopped speculation of a summer exit with only one destination likely to be able to afford his blockbuster salary: “Well, exactly. I think we know they're probably the only place that would guarantee him that kind of money. Now in terms of the summer would be the Saudi Pro League.” Pearce said on the Walk On podcast.
“That interest has been there in Salah for a number of years. It was there in January if he had really wanted to try and get away from Liverpool, but he didn't. Because up until now, he's never shown any great interest in wanting to go and play there because anyone that's seen Salah interview knows that he is incredibly driven and loves breaking records, loves competing at the highest level and he's not ready to drop down to the standard of the Saudi Pro League.
“That's been his position until now and I think he'll want to stay at the top level as long as he possibly can. Now, the question is, will there be more suitors come the summer? The MLS is another possible destination for him.
“It's been suggested to me that that actually is more appealing in many ways than the Saudi Pro League, but yeah, I don't see any kind of real attractive options for him coming up in Europe, but the biggest thing for me as well is whatever happens, I hope there's some clarity before the end of the season, regardless of how the rest of the season goes, because I just think when you've had the career that he's had.
“I'd love to see him get a proper farewell, I hope it's not one of those ones where a Sadio Mane type, where there's a bit of uncertainty over what will happen, and then he leaves not long after the end of the season, and misses out on the recognition that he should get, because we're talking about one of the all-time greats, the third highest goal scorer in Liverpool's history, someone who's set crazy, crazy high standards, and that's another reason why I was so pleased that him and Slot don't need to be best mates, do they?”
Saudi Arabia or MLS for Salah?
Fabrizio Romano, as he always is, has been at the heart of speculation linking Salah with a move to Saudi Arabia and with the forward’s agents already being allowed to speak to clubs, it isn’t a surprise to see where the interest is coming from: “And they didn’t have time to replace them with absolute superstars, of course, with very good players, including also on Youssef En-Nesyri for sure from Fenerbahce, but they need probably a big name, and so Mohamed Salah could be a part of the conversation in the summer.
“I’m told that there could be more Saudi clubs attentive and keen on Mohamed Salah. Let’s see also from the MLS if some club decided to enter the conversation and sign Mohamed Salah from Liverpool. I think it’s going to be an interesting summer around the Egyptian winger. In general, at the end, nothing materialised in terms of official proposals or concrete possibilities.
“So, Mohamed Salah ended up staying at Liverpool. But of course, in the summer, the story could be different. There is plenty of time. So, let’s wait. There is an interest from Al-Ittihad. Not only Saudi clubs will be attentive as they’ve always been for Mohamed Salah.” With another year left of his contract to run, if he wants to stay at Liverpool, he can. After this season, he might feel that he has a point to prove rather than fly off into the sunset to put his feet up for the rest of his career.
