Emmanuel Petit believes Man City boss Pep Guardiola would welcome Julian Alvarez back at the Etihad.
There has been growing speculation about the Argentinian international’s future, with suggestions that he is open to leaving Atletico Madrid. Asked for his thoughts on the player, Petit said:
“When Julian Alvarez was playing for City, I really liked him. He didn’t start every single game, but every time he played for City, and for Atletico [Madrid] as well since, he has been really special.”

“He can score goals and give assists, but he’s got temper, personality, and character. I think in terms of movement, he is very intelligent. Physically as well, he’s a top player, and technically, he’s got everything to suit the best clubs in Europe.
“The reason why he left City was because he wanted to play regular football, but I think Pep Guardiola would be very happy to have him back in the squad.”
Could Man City re-sign Alvarez?
The chances of the forward moving back to Manchester are pretty low. The reason why he left in the first place is that he didn’t want to play second fiddle to Erling Haaland, despite starting 39 times in his final season with the club.
Arsenal are deemed the likeliest destination if Alvarez opts for a return to England. Reports in the Spanish media in recent days have suggested that the Gunners tabled an offer worth €120m (£105m) last summer, which unsettled the player.
However, it is felt that Barcelona would be his preferred club if he were to leave Atletico, although the La Liga champions may not have the resources to finance a bid for him.
Marmoush was signed to fill Alvarez’s position
It could be argued that Omar Marmoush was the Argentinian’s direct replacement. The Egyptian international possesses the ability to play out wide or through the middle, much like Alvarez.
Injuries and international commitments have, though, curtailed Marmoush’s impact this season, and his goal return of 4 goals and 1 assist in 23 appearances isn’t much to write home about. He did score a brace against Newcastle in the second leg of the Carabao Cuup semi-final earlier this month, so his form is beginning to pick up.
