Off the back of his humongous Super Bowl halftime performance, Bad Bunny has landed his first lead acting role in the forthcoming historical drama, Porto Rico.

As per Deadline, the Grammy-winner will star in the movie, directed by veteran rapper René “Residente” Pérez Joglar.

The film promises to be an epic Caribbean western and historical drama. He will star alongside Viggo Mortensen of Captain Fantastic, Edward Norton of Birdman, and Javier Bardem of No Country for Old Men.

The project will be executive-produced by multi-Oscar-winning director and producer Alejandro G. Iñárritu.

In 2023, it was announced that Oscar-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris wrote the screenplay, which was a historical drama based on the life of Puerto Rican revolutionary José Maldonado Román, also known as ‘White Eagle’.

Román fought against colonialism with a gang of ex-convicts to vindicate Puerto Rico as it fought for the establishment of its identity as a country. It is currently unclear whether the project will go ahead with this plot.

Residente has said of the project, “I have dreamed of making a film about my country since I was a child. Puerto Rico’s true history has always been surrounded by controversy. This film is a reaffirmation of who we are — told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves.”

Norton added, “This film sits in a tradition of films we deeply love, from The Godfather to Gangs of New York, that both thrill us with visceral drama and iconic characters and eras while also forcing us to face up to the shadow story under the American narrative of idealism.”

He went on, “Everybody knows what a poet of language and rhythm René is. Now they’re going to see what a visual visionary he is as well. And bringing him and Bad Bunny together to tell the true story of Puerto Rico’s roots is going to be like a flame finding the stick of dynamite that’s been waiting for it.”

Bad Bunny recently shared his own tribute to Puerto Rico during the Super Bowl halftime show on February 8th, which was viewed by 128.2 million viewers and saw the performer become the first musician to ever execute an entire halftime show entirely in Spanish.

Bad Bunny is no stranger to the big screen, having acted in the likes of Happy Gilmore 2, Bullet Train, Caught Stealing, and F9.
