TAPE BREAKDOWN

With the modern NFL tight end, all the rage is about their pass-catching abilities. That makes sense, but you’ve got to be able to block to play the position, too. And in all honesty, that is an area Kenyon Sadiq needs a bit of refinement in. Too often, he gets grabby and loses leverage. However, I’m not especially worried about him in that regard. One, he’s very young, and two, he shows promise at times.

This isn’t anything major, but it shows some of the things Sadiq can do well as a blocker.

Sadiq is in a three-point stance outside the right tackle. His assignment is simple, but he quickly turns his back to the hole and uses his length to extend on the edge rusher. As the back goes through the hole, Sadiq turns himself to maintain leverage. Blocking isn’t a strength of Sadiq’s, but moments like these don’t make it feel like too strong a weakness, either.

That said, misses like these just can’t happen at the NFL level.

Sadiq’s on the right end of the line of scrimmage again here. He goes for a quick lunge at the defender and completely misses, nearly blowing the play up.

But any team that drafts Sadiq will be doing so with his ability as a pass-catcher in mind. He’s already athletic for the position, but he’s a very refined route runner as well.

Sadiq is in the slot on the left here, and he’s just running a quick post route up the middle of the field. He’s a constant mismatch in man coverage, which is evident here. The ball doesn’t come his way, but Sadiq makes an excellent break and leaves his defender in the dust.

Whether it’s a safety, a nickel corner or a linebacker against him in man coverage, Sadiq is always dangerous.

Here, he’s in the slot to the right of the formation. His size and speed make him an obvious threat down the seam, especially near the end zone. But he’s even harder to defend with footwork as good as this. Sadiq beats his defender with a quick double move, locates the ball, and brings it in for a touchdown.

This is a concept Oregon loved to use with Sadiq. He made an even more impressive play against Rutgers on nearly the same play call. This time, Sadiq motions from the line to the slot and runs a seam up the middle. He puts another nice move on the defender, speeds past him into the open field, and then makes a terrific catch for a touchdown.

One of the beautiful things about Sadiq’s game is his ability to play all over the field. Even with the tight end position getting more agile over the last few years, Sadiq brings a different element to the offense.

Here, he’s lined up out wide at the bottom of the frame, running a deep crosser. Once he gets to the cornerback, he does a good job of staying inside and avoiding any issues with timing. He finds the soft spot in the zone coverage, locates the ball, and brings in a nice long reception over the middle.

CONCLUSION

Kenyon Sadiq is beaming with potential. In the league that’s seen athletic tight ends start to take over the position, Sadiq definitely fits that mold. You can put him anywhere on the offense. Oregon even had him lined up in the backfield occasionally. Sadiq has really impressive speed and occupies defensive attention down the field. He’s also useful in the quick game, where he can rack up yards after the catch. His speed, strength and overall athleticism make him a dynamic tight end.

As dynamic as he is, there are some areas he needs to work on. First and foremost, he must improve as a blocker. Sadiq will need to add strength and refine his technique, and he’ll enter the league as a liability in that regard. He also needs to eliminate concentration drops and could be more active on short routes while his quarterback is scrambling. But with that said, he’s also going to be only 21 years old during his rookie year. There is plenty of time for Sadiq to make his improvements, and I’m confident he will.

I have higher expectations for Sadiq’s career, but he reminds me of Tyler Higbee, an athletic tight end with a good combination of size and agility, yet he had to develop as a blocker once entering the league.
