Why Liverpool called up 2 new faces from U21s for pre-Forest training

Liverpool’s first-team squad was bolstered by the late addition of Calvin Ramsay and two others from the U21s as they prepare for Nottingham Forest.

An initial squad of 19 senior players worked in the gym at the AXA Training Centre on Wednesday before heading out onto the pitches for their first session ahead of Sunday’s clash with Forest.

But with the group light with only 16 outfielders they were later joined by three U21s defenders in Ramsay, 22, Josh Davidson, 20, and Terence Miles, 21.

The trio made their way over to the first-team pitch after warming up with Rob Page’s academy squad, taking part in small-sided training drills.

Liverpool Training Squad vs. Nottingham Forest

Goalkeepers: Alisson, Mamardashvili, Woodman

Defenders: Van Dijk, Konate, Gomez, Kerkez, Robertson, Ramsay, Davidson, Miles

Midfielders: Szoboszlai, Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Jones, Nyoni

Forwards: Wirtz, Salah, Ekitike, Gakpo, Chiesa, Ngumoha

While Ramsay could keep his place on the bench for the trip to Nottingham Forest, there is little expectation that Davidson or Miles will be considered.

Instead their role in training came as additional defenders, allowing Arne Slot‘s attackers to replicate in-game situations in the absence of the injured Jeremie Frimpong, Wataru Endo, Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni.

Despite the return to fitness of Joe Gomez, Liverpool remain short of numbers in defence and that often requires call-ups from the U21s for sessions at the AXA.

Miles and Davidson are the two oldest available defenders in Page’s squad and therefore it makes logical sense that they would be the ones brought in to stand up as a physical test for Slot’s senior forwards.

This was also the case at the end of January when Miles joined first-team training along with Rhys Williams, 25, and forwards Oakley Cannonier, 21, and Kareem Ahmed, 19.

Liverpool to consider summer move for Calvin Ramsay

At the time those four players were not selected to travel with the U21s for their 1-0 win over Brighton and therefore stayed to flesh out the senior ranks in preparation for the Premier League clash with Newcastle.

Liverpool are almost certain to consider summer moves for all three of Ramsay, Davidson and Miles as they find themselves unable to break into the first-team picture.

Ramsay attracted interest from a host of clubs ahead of the January transfer window but the decision was made to keep the Scot as defensive cover.

But Slot has made it clear that he does not feature in his long-term plans and Liverpool could sanction a sale at the end of the season.
