The role Liverpool insiders think Hugo Ekitike could have at Liverpool alongside Alexander Isak - journalist

Alexander Isak is on his way back from injury, which could mean Hugo Ekitike is moved out wide.

Arne Slot provided an update on Isak during his pre-Nottingham Forest press conference on Thursday.

The Swede has been out of action since suffering an injury in the 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur earlier this season.

However, Isak could be back in March, and Slot will have a decision to make on how he fits both strikers into the same team.

Hugo Ekitike could be moved out wide

Because Isak missed pre-season with Newcastle United and has had a few injury/fitness issues since arriving at Anfield, Ekitike has been the primary number nine this term.

The Frenchman, who is being compared to Fernando Torres, has stepped up and scored 15 goals as a Red.

But as Slot only plays one out-and-out striker, questions must be asked about how both players will start together.

Well, speaking in a Q&A for the Liverpool Echo, Paul Gorst has now revealed that those inside the club still think Ekitike can be used off the left.

He stated: “There is a belief that Ekitike could operate off the left, in time, but Isak’s lack of a pre-season and then the injuries – the groin issue at Eintracht Frankfurt and the broken leg at Spurs – have limited the ability to play both in the same XI.

“Isak will be a huge success at Liverpool, I have no doubt about that and Ekitike, while primarily viewed as a No.9 by those at the club, is still capable of playing in wider or more withdrawn roles, according to those at the AXA Training Centre.”

Arne Slot on playing Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak together

Because of Isak’s issues, the pair have hardly featured together this season.

Their brief spell on the pitch at the back end of 2025 saw the former Newcastle man playing off the left.

But Slot thinks Ekitike can be used out wide as well. He said in November: “Hugo could also play off the left in my opinion or maybe around Alex where Alex is more of a out and out is I think the way you say it out and out nine.

“He’s just the finisher of the attacks, could drop into midfield.

“But Hugo is yeah, maybe more a player that also likes to drop more in spaces coming off the left, where Alex I think prefers to be in the middle.”
