The SanFrancisco49ers won’t just be tested by opponents in 2026 — they’ll be tested by geography.
Just over a week after the announcement that San Francisco will face the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game in Australia, the 49ers confirmed another international stop for the upcoming season.
The team announced Wednesday it will host a regular-season game at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City, with the opponent to be announced at a later date.
With upcoming trips to Australia and Mexico City, not to mention Atlanta and New York, the 49ers will travel over 38,000 miles this season — more miles than any NFL team has traveled in any one season, per @billsperos. pic.twitter.com/ITha7YVGVH

2026 San Francisco 49ers Set For Record-Setting Travel
Those trips — combined with cross-country road games against the New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons — will push San Francisco past the 38,000-mile mark during the 2026 season.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, that total represents more miles than any NFL team has traveled in a single season.
The Mexico City game is part of the NFL’s three-year commitment to play regular-season games in the country, which boasts the league’s largest fanbase outside the United States. Beyond game days, the NFL and the 49ers continue to invest in the region through fan engagement, NFL Flag programs, and community initiatives.
San Francisco is no stranger to international play in Mexico. The 49ers most recently appeared there in 2022, defeating the Arizona Cardinals 38–10 on Monday Night Football. They also played in the NFL’s first-ever international regular-season game in Mexico City in 2005.
“We are delighted to bring regular-season NFL games back to Mexico City beginning in 2026,” NFL Mexico director General Arturo Olivé said. “Returning here underscores our commitment to growing the sport at every level in the market.”
