Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer was very complimentary of the team hiring Christian Parker as defensive coordinator.
The Dallas Cowboys have a foundation on offense to be successful under head coach Brian Schottenheimer. But the team must fix its defense.
The first step was hiring a new defensive coordinator. The Cowboys did that, naming 34-year-old Christian Parker as its new man in charge of that side of the ball.
During Parker introductory press conference Wednesday, Schottenheimer delivered a clear and concise message on how excited he is about the team’s new DC.
“This was a great hire for the Cowboys,” said Schottenheimer.
Parker arrived in Dallas from the Philadelphia Eagles. The 2026 season will be the first time he serves as a defensive coordinator at any level.
Cowboys Introduce Christian Parker as New DC
In his first season as head coach, Schottenheimer, who was previously the Cowboys offensive coordinator, had Dallas ranked among the best offenses in the league. The Cowboys finished the 2025 season No. 2 in yards and seventh in points scored.
But the defense was on the opposite side of the spectrum. The Cowboys were 30th in yards allowed and 32nd in points yielded.
Schottenheimer, though, appears confident Parker can turn things around defensively enough for Dallas to be more competitive in 2026.
During his introductory press conference, Parker outlined his vision for the Dallas defense. Parker stressed stopping the run and disrupting the quarterback.
“You affect the quarterback by stopping the run… When you have teams in 3rd-and-2s and 3rd-and-3s, usually those aren’t the defenses that are as successful,” Parker said. “But if you can win first down and you’re strong on fundamentals, we’re getting off blocks, we’re tackling, we’re attacking the football, we’re situationally aware, those are the ones that are successful.”
Brian Schottenheimer Only Cowboys Presence at Parker’s 1st Press Conference
Cowboys pundits responded positively to Parker’s introductory press conference. Obviously, actions speak louder than words. But Parker said the right things.
Cowboys writers were also very positive about the fact the organization allowed Schottenheimer to sit alone with Parker during the presser.
“There were only two people present. The two in question were head coach Brian Schottenheimer and Parker himself,” wrote SB Nation’s Blogging the Boys’ RJ Ochoa.
“It may seem like we are being overdramatic here, but you have to recognize that this is the Dallas Cowboys we are talking about. Every press conference or appearance where the team has a spokesperson present has involved either Jerry Jones, Stephen Jones, or in some non-football settings another member of the Jones family.
“This press conference was directly in relation to the football part of the franchise and that neither Jerry nor Stephen were in attendance spoke volumes.”
Parker began his coaching career with Virginia State as a defensive backs coach. He served as a defensive analyst at Notre Dame and Texas A&M before then becoming the Green Bay Packers defensive quality control coach in 2019.
Parker received his first position coach opportunity with the Denver Broncos in 2021. He was defensive backs coach in Denver for three seasons.
With the Eagles, he coached defensive backs and served as passing game coordinator. Parker was on staff when the team won the Super Bowl a year ago.
The Cowboys hired Parker to replace fired Matt Eberflus. The former Chicago Bears head coach was the Cowboys defensive coordinator for only one season.
