Celtics sign new trade addition to 15-man roster

The Celtics are filling one of their open 15-man roster spots with a recent acquisition to the franchise. A source confirmed to MassLive that Boston is converting two-way guard John Tonje to a 10-day contract. Michael Scotto of Hoopshype was first to report the news.

The Celtics acquired Tonje from the Utah Jazz at the trade deadline as part of the deal that sent Chris Boucher and a future second-round pick to the Jazz. Tonje took the open two-way spot that was created when center Amari Williams signed a standard two-year deal with the deal.

Tonje, 24, was the 53rd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and was signed to a two-way deal by Utah afterwards. He played primarily in the G League this year for the Salt Lake City Stars, averaging 18.0 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. He played six seasons in the NCAA, closing out his career with Wisconsins as an All-American after stints with Colorado State and Missouri.

The Celtics also signed point guard Dalano Banton to a 10-day contract on Thursday, bringing the team’s main roster to 14 players after creating two open roster spots after the trade deadline. Boston dealt Josh Minott, Xavier Tillman and Chris Boucher at the trade deadline to get under the luxury tax. Look for Boston to stay under that tax line in the coming weeks with a variety of 10-day deals before eventually signing two players for the remainder of the season.

Tonje and Banton are expected to be with the team tonight in Golden State as the Celtics kick off a four-game road trip against the Warriors.
