The Seattle Seahawks have promoted assistant coach Justin Outten to run game coordinator, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on social media Thursday morning.
Will the Seahawks re-sign edge rusher Boye Mafe?
Outten was the Seahawks’ assistant offensive line coach and run game specialist last season, his first with the franchise.
The 42-year-old was one of four in-house coaches who interviewed to replace Klint Kubiak, who is now the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, as offensive coordinator. However, the team reportedly hired San Francisco 49ers run game coordinator and tight ends coach Brian Fleury for that job. An introductory press conference for Fleury is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
The position of run game coordinator opened up after Rick Dennison reportedly left to join Kubiak’s staff in Vegas.
A Syracuse alumnus and former college center, Outten is heading into his 11th season as an NFL coach. He started as a coaching intern with the Atlanta Falcons in 2016 and was promoted to offensive assistant in 2017. In 2019, Outten joined the Green Bay Packers’ staff as their tight ends coach.
Outten landed the offensive coordinator job with the Denver Broncos in 2022 where he coached Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. He took over play-calling duties for the Broncos for the final two games of the season following the firing of then-head coach Nathaniel Hackett.
Outten became the Tennessee Titans running backs coach and run game coordinator in 2023. He was moved to tight ends coach the following season. He joined the Seahawks in February 2025 following Kubiak’s hiring as offensive coordinator.
In addition to his duties as run game specialist and assistant offensive line coach, Outten helped out with the Seahawks’ running backs following former running backs coach Kennedy Polamalu’s exit from the team in December.
