The Pittsburgh Steelers need a quarterback of the future. Could Drew Allar be the guy? Chad Reuter of NFL.com put together a Steelers mock draft. He has the team selecting Allar in the third round (76th overall pick).
The Steelers possess multiple picks in the third round. They would be selecting Allar with the pick acquired from the Dallas Cowboys in the George Pickens trade.
Surely, Pittsburgh would love to draft Fernando Mendoza. The Indiana quarterback is expected to go No. 1 to the Las Vegas Raiders. But unless the Steelers can trade up for the top pick (which definitely won’t happen), they won’t be landing the Heisman Trophy winner. Drafting Allar in the third round is much more realistic.
A Mock Draft Has the Pittsburgh Steelers Taking Quarterback Drew Allar in the Third Round
Allar’s Career Thus Far
Drew Allar attended Medina High School, located in Medina, Ohio. During his senior year, he passed for 4,444 yards and 48 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He also rushed for 406 yards and nine scores. As a result, he was named Ohio Mr. Football.
Allar then committed to Penn State. Serving as a backup during his freshman year, he passed for 344 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Allar became a starter the following season. That year, he threw for 2,631 yards and 25 touchdowns. He also rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns.
2024 would be the best season of Allar’s career. He recorded 3,327 passing yards and 24 touchdowns while rushing for 302 yards and six scores. More importantly, he helped lead the Nittany Lions to a 13-3 record, including a 31-14 Fiesta Bowl win over Boise State.
Drew Allar entered the 2025 season as one of the top quarterback prospects in the country. However, a season-ending ankle injury limited him to just six games and ended his college career.

The Steelers are coming off a decent, but definitely not legendary season. They finished with a 10-7 record and won the AFC North. However, they were blown out 30-6 by the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.
Aaron Rodgers was Pittsburgh‘s starting quarterback. It remains to be seen whether he stays with the team. At 42 years old, Rodgers obviously isn’t the superstar he used to be. The Steelers quarterback room needs to get younger.
With that said, the Steelers should consider drafting Drew Allar. He has very good size (6-foot-5 and 235 pounds) and arm strength. He also has a high football IQ and good pocket mobility.
The Steelers selected Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Allar could compete with him to back up Rodgers (if he returns). Then later on, he could possibly emerge as Pittsburgh’s starter.
No, Allar doesn’t have the potential of a Fernando Mendoza. But he could still develop into a quality signal-caller.
