Pittsburgh Steelers Legend Mike Wagner, Four-Time Super Bowl Champion Safety, Dies at 76

Wagner was a key member of Pittsburgh’s dominant 1970s dynasty, helping Pittsburgh win Super Bowls IX, X, XIII, and XIV. A hard-hitting safety known for his instincts, toughness, and consistency, he earned two Pro Bowl selections and led the NFL with eight interceptions in 1973. He also recorded interceptions in Super Bowl IX and X.

Steelers president Art Rooney II released the following statement:

“On behalf of the entire Pittsburgh Steelers organization, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Mike’s family. He will always be remembered as a champion, a great teammate, and a proud member of the Steelers family.”

Mike Wagner’s Steelers Career Highlights

Drafted by Pittsburgh in the 11th round (No. 267 overall) of the 1971 NFL Draft out of Western Illinois University.

Played all 11 NFL seasons (1971–1981) with the Steelers.

Career stats: 36 interceptions (8th in franchise history), 12 fumble recoveries, 2 defensive touchdowns.

Started 123 games, anchoring the secondary alongside legends like Mel Blount, Donnie Shell, and Glen Edwards.

Part of one of the greatest defensive units in NFL history, helping the Steelers post shutouts in Super Bowl IX and X.

After retirement, Wagner remained connected to Pittsburgh through community work and alumni events. He was inducted into the Steelers’ Hall of Honor and widely regarded as one of the most reliable and respected players of his era.
