“Did Everything He Needed”: Mel Kiper Jr. Breaks Down Fernando Mendoza’s Rise to Raiders’ Draft …

Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza made history on January 19, completing a stunning 16-0 season with a 27-21 victory over Miami in the College Football Playoff National Championship. The Heisman Trophy winner helped Indiana claim its first-ever national title with a key fourth-quarter rushing touchdown.

His performance has now made him the top name in the 2026 NFL Draft conversation, and one of football’s most respected voices has a strong verdict.

Mel Kiper Calls Fernando Mendoza an “Outstanding Prospect” at No. 1 Pick

NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has declared Mendoza the undisputed top prospect for the 2026 draft. On a recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Kiper stated it was “nonsense” to question Mendoza’s spot at No. 1, calling him a strong fit for the Las Vegas Raiders.

He praised Mendoza as a “Outstanding Prospect,” pointing to his ability to perform under pressure in big games as a key reason for his confidence. Kiper also said Mendoza “did everything that you needed to do to solidify that spot” as the top overall pick.

Earlier in the draft season, Oregon’s Dante Moore pushed hard for the top quarterback spot, but Mendoza rose above the competition through a strong postseason that included wins over Alabama and Oregon before the title game against Miami, played at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Mendoza finished the 16-game season with 3,535 passing yards, a 72 percent completion rate, 41 touchdowns, and just six interceptions. The key moment of his season came when he broke through the Miami defense on a 12-yard fourth-and-4 quarterback draw to give Indiana a 24-14 lead, a play his coach called “rolling the dice.”

His strong arm, smart decision-making, and composure under pressure throughout the playoffs only strengthened his case as the top prospect in this class.

Kiper told fans with the Raiders holding the No. 1 pick, “Raider Nation, be happy… you struck gold here,” pointing to offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak as an ideal fit for Mendoza’s skill set.

The NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis runs February 23 through March 2, giving teams their first up-close evaluation of Mendoza ahead of draft weekend.

Fernando Mendoza enters the 2026 NFL Draft as the projected No. 1 overall pick, with the Las Vegas Raiders selecting April 23 in Pittsburgh. A franchise reset is on the horizon for Raider Nation.
