Former Liverpool goalkeeper faces axe

Liverpool could be set for another busy summer, though there is significant work to do before the transfer window reopens. The Reds defeated Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup over the weekend and will face Wolves in the fifth round.

Their primary objective is securing Champions League qualification as they chase Manchester United and Chelsea in the league. A return to Europe’s top competition could prove decisive in attracting further major signings following the addition of Jeremy Jacquet.

The Reds were quiet in January despite defensive injuries, only agreeing a deal for Jacquet, who will arrive later this year. Missing out on the Champions League could impact summer plans, something manager Arne Slot is aware of.

Meanwhile, former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is approaching the end of his time at Club Brugge. Since joining in 2019, he has made over 300 appearances, winning four league titles and a domestic cup.

Mignolet joined Club Brugge after a six-year spell at Liverpool that included more than 200 appearances and a Champions League winner’s medal.

He arrived at Anfield from Sunderland in 2013 and impressed under Brendan Rodgers, famously saving a last-minute penalty on his home debut during Liverpool’s 2013-14 title challenge.

Mignolet regained the No.1 spot after competition in 2014-15 and remained a key figure following Jurgen Klopp’s arrival, featuring in the 2016 League Cup and Europa League finals. Despite challenges from Loris Karius and later Alisson Becker, he played an important squad role.

He earned a Champions League medal when Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur in Madrid in 2019 before departing for regular football in Belgium.

According to HLN, Brugge are considering Koen Casteels as a replacement. The 33-year-old currently earns around €10m per year at Al-Qadsiah, meaning a return to Europe would likely require a pay cut.

With Mignolet’s contract expiring this summer, the final months of his successful Brugge spell appear to be approaching, cementing his legacy as one of the club’s standout goalkeepers.
