What Seahawks GM said about the OC hiring process

A week ago, Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider and head coach Mike Macdonald were celebrating their Super Bowl victory with a championship parade through the city.

Why Macdonald landed on Fleury as Seahawks’ new OC

The very next day, they were back at work interviewing offensive coordinator candidates to replace Klint Kubiak, who had departed to become the Las Vegas Raiders’ head coach.

Such is life in the NFL – a league that seemingly never sleeps.

“It just doesn’t stop,” Schneider told Seattle Sports’ Wyman and Bob on Thursday. “But it’s pretty cool to be playing that long.”

This past Sunday – four days after the parade – it was reported that the Seahawks had landed on San Francisco 49ers assistant Brian Fleury as their new OC. And on Thursday, Fleury was formally introduced at a press conference.

Schneider praised Macdonald for how he went about the OC search, which reportedly included at least four in-house candidates and two external candidates.

“Mike did a great job of just following his process,” Schneider said. “Like, OK, we’re going to interview some in-house guys (and some guys) outside the building as well, and this is what our process is going to look like, and then just stay consistent. He did a great job.”

Schneider, assistant general manager Nolan Teasley and vice president of player personnel Trent Kirchner also did some initial groundwork ahead of the Super Bowl once it became clear Kubiak was headed to Las Vegas.

“We wanted to keep it away from Mike and the coaching staff (before the Super Bowl),” Schneider said. “So our staff (did) research on guys – whether it was in-house or going outside the building – on what that would look like for Mike, so that it would be as turnkey as you could make it on Sunday night after the game and Monday.”

While the Seahawks hired an external candidate, it appears most of their offensive coaching staff will remain intact. At the moment, quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko and run game coordinator/senior offensive advisor Rick Dennison are the only reported Seahawks offensive assistants following Kubiak to Las Vegas.

Schneider said it was a priority to maintain as much continuity as possible with the offensive coaching staff.

“Mike talked about it a little earlier in the press conference about it’s kind of like our 70,” Schneider said, referring to how they view their roster as a 70-man crew that includes both their 53-man active roster and their 17-man practice squad. “Like, how do we keep as many guys as we can together that are all going to contribute.”

The John Schneider Show will air every Thursday at 4 p.m. on Wyman and Bob leading up to the 2026 NFL Draft.
