Warriors' Al Horford Gives Cryptic Explanation For Leaving Celtics

The Boston Celtics made some major roster changes last summer, trading Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday to the Atlanta Hawks and Portland Trail Blazers, respectively. They also moved on from Luke Kornet and Al Horford, losing both big men in free agency.

By the time Horford finally signed with the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 1, just a few weeks before the start of the regular season, his departure was already a foregone conclusion after nearly three months of free agency rumors and speculation.

The Celtics appeared to be taking a step back this season, and Horford presumably wanted a shot at another ring at age 39. Boston was also pivoting to younger players and needed to slash payroll, making Horford a less-than-ideal fit.

While many fans simply assumed Horford left the Celtics to chase another ring, he gave a cryptic explanation for his departure prior to Thursday's game between Boston and the Warriors.

Horford to @RealBobManning on his departure from BOS: "For me, the decision, it's something that's deeper than just the basketball stuff. And it's something that at some point I'll share with people, but for me, it felt like it was the time for me to go elsewhere." @CLNSMedia pic.twitter.com/lsPh0sJHYP

"For me, the decision, it's something that's deeper than just the basketball stuff. And it's something that at some point I'll share with people, but for me, it felt like it was the time for me to go elsewhere," Horford told Celtics reporter Bobby Manning.

After seven seasons with Boston, perhaps Horford simply wanted a change of scenery. However, it's also possible he may have developed a conflict or some other issue with the organization. Perhaps he felt mistreated or disrespected during free agency.

It sounds like something may have happened off the court that motivated Horford to leave. But until he reveals the truth, Celtics fans can only wonder why he left.
