Former Longhorns competed in Super Bowl LX — 3 walked out with their first ring

Seahawks players Byron Murphy II, Michael Dickson and Quandre Diggs, as well as Patriots player Brenden Schooler, stepped onto football’s biggest stage on Feb. 8 in Super Bowl LX. Two former Longhorns delivered standout performances, while three walked away with a ring.

This championship marks the most Longhorns to compete in the Super Bowl in more than a decade, since five competed in 2011.

Murphy, a defensive tackle, was a key factor in Seattle’s victory on Sunday. The first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft finished the game with two sacks and one fumble recovery. He also helped hold the Patriots’ offense to just 79 rushing yards. Murphy’s performance continued a journey that began in his home state of Texas.

“Not only did he win it all, he was a huge reason it happened,” wrote Murphy’s agent, Ron Slavin, who’s been with him since his time at Texas, in an Instagram post. “From DeSoto, to the University of Texas, to the Seattle Seahawks, he kept showing up, kept working, kept proving people wrong.”

Another player who made a significant impact on the game was the Seahawks’ punter, Dickson. Dickson won the Ray Guy award in 2017 and was named the 2016 Big 12 Conference Special Teams Player of the Year during his time at Texas. He was drafted to the Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He finished the game with seven punts, three of them being inside the 6-yard line, while holding Patriots returner Marcus Jones to only four return yards.

With the game being a battle of field positions, as no touchdowns were scored in the first half, Dickson’s performance stood out, demonstrating how much impact a skilled punter can have on a game.

“I always want to give my defense the best field position,” Dickson said after the Super Bowl. “It was cool hitting it inside the 10 a few times and getting the boys around me. It was special.”

A former Longhorn cornerback, Diggs, also earned his first Super Bowl ring after being drafted in the sixth round of the draft by Detroit in 2015. During his time at Texas, Diggs started all four years and was named to the second-team All-Big 12 in 2011. He joined Seattle’s practice squad in November 2025.

Not every Longhorn left the field a champion. Patriots special teamer Schooler, a two-year Texas player who appeared in 21 games as both a wide receiver and safety, was signed to New England as an undrafted free agent in 2022. Schooler was named a captain for the Patriots for the Super Bowl game. Schooler helped hold Seahawks returner Rashid Shaheed to just 36 yards.
