Fabrizio Romano provides new update on Arne Slot's future as Liverpool head coach after Xabi…

Liverpool sit sixth in the Premier League table and head coach Arne Slot has faced pressure.

Liverpool will hold an internal review at the end of the 2025-26 season, it has been claimed.

The Reds have endured a disappointing Premier League campaign as champions. They were favourites to retain their crown which was yielded with relative ease in Arne Slot’s maiden season as head coach. But Liverpool’s defence was over well before Christmas and they currently sit sixth in the table - facing a battle to secure Champions League qualification.

Claiming the European Cup for a seventh time in the club’s history still remains a possibility, with the Reds safely in the last 16, while they have reached the FA Cup fifth round. But Slot has come under pressure throughout the campaign, with some sections of fans wanting a chance in the Anfield hot seat.

Slot’s current contract expires in June 2027. With former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso out of work after being sacked by Real Madrid, and reportedly turned down the Marseille job this month, Slot’s future does remain somewhat uncertain.

Slot has had the backing of Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) and after two losses in 19 games, may well have come out of the difficult patch. Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano said on the Here We Go podcast: “For Arne Slot, the situation is quite clear. Obviously, being in [the] Champions League next season would be absolutely crucial for Liverpool. So that would also help Arne Slot arriving to the end of the season in a more relaxed situation with the club.

“Otherwise, if Liverpool will not be in the Champions League next season, and let’s see what kind of Champions League second part of the season they will do now. I think this could bring Liverpool into an important review in the summer.

“So now the full focus is on the pitch is on Champions League on the opportunity to win a trophy of course would be massive for Liverpool. Then in the summer review of the club let’s see if Liverpool will be in [the] Champions League next season or not and that’s going to be one of the factors to decide on Arne Slot.

“So I expect the club at the end of the season to meet; owners, board, management all together decide what they want to do. At the moment, they’ve always been protecting Arne Slot even in difficult moments around October, November when the situation was really complicated.

“They’ve always been backing the manager so always showing the trust, but then at the end of the season, there will be an internal review and we will see.”
