Julián Alvarez
Julián Alvarez
Arsenal and Chelsea have both positioned themselves in the race for Julián Álvarez, but fresh claims from Argentina suggest Barcelona could yet deliver a blow to both London clubs.
As previously reported, Arsenal made Atlético Madrid an offer worth £85m plus £17m in bonuses (€100m + €20m) during the Club World Cup. Atlético rejected it and made clear the striker was not for sale.
Since then, the most advanced contacts have reportedly been with Chelsea, who continue to assess whether a deal could become realistic.
Now, Argentine journalist Hugo Balassone has reignited the situation with strong comments on Radio La Red.
Argentina points to Barcelona move
Balassone was categorical. He said: “My information is that Julián Álvarez will play for Barcelona. There was interest from Arsenal. His cycle at Atlético Madrid is over. It has not been a good season for him. He believes his career needs a team that can give him a title.”
He continued: “The motivation for Julián is to go to a team that can be champions. It is true Atlético de Madrid can win the Copa del Rey, but it has not been the step he expected. I can confirm this – after the World Cup he will play, in my opinion, for one of the best teams in the world. Can you imagine Yamal and Julián up front?”
That is a strong statement, especially considering Atlético have recently moved to offer the 25-year-old a contract renewal to avoid transfer drama.
This season he has scored 13 goals in 34 appearances, including recent strikes against Club Brugge and Barcelona themselves. He remains Diego Simeone’s key attacking reference.
Barcelona also face presidential elections on March 15, which could influence major sporting decisions.
What this means for Arsenal and Chelsea
For Arsenal, the message is clear. Atlético turned down €100m (£85m) plus €20m (£17m). There has been no public sign that their stance has softened.
For Chelsea, whose contacts are described as the most advanced so far, this Argentine claim introduces a potential competitor with strong appeal. If Álvarez’s priority is joining a side expected to compete immediately for major honours, Barcelona’s project could resonate.
That said, this remains one journalist’s assertion. Atlético’s official stance has not changed. Until it does, Arsenal and Chelsea remain in the conversation – but the noise from Argentina suggests London may not be alone in the race.
