The Los Angeles Lakers are thinking big for 2026. According to Sam Amick of The Athletic, the team intends to go all-in for Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer if the Milwaukee Bucks are open to trading him.
The Lakers are not just testing the waters, it’s a calculated move to preserve assets and position themselves strategically, which also explains why Los Angeles stayed away from any major deals at the trade deadline.
Los Angeles have the pieces to put together a strong offer. With three tradable first-round picks and two pick swaps at their disposal, they have plenty of draft capital to work with, especially if Milwaukee opts for a full rebuild instead of a partial retool. Still, the scenario is far from simple.
Austin Reaves is Los Angeles’ most valuable asset, as the team lacks a deep pool of young, elite prospects. The organization is reluctant to part with him, particularly since Luka Doncic reportedly enjoys playing alongside him.
They appreciate Reaves’ scoring ability, toughness, and contract flexibility. If the Bucks insist on including him in a deal, the Lakers would need to either extend and trade him later or structure a sign-and-trade.
Outside of Austin Reaves, the Lakers have limited depth. They do not possess a group of promising young players on rookie contracts, nor do they have enough mid-tier assets to assemble a compelling trade package. This limitation becomes even more important when stacked against other teams competing for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Could Giannis Antetokounmpo choose the Lakers?

Leading up to the trade deadline, Giannis Antetokounmpo was linked to the Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors, and Minnesota Timberwolves. Each of these franchises can put together deals that include either established All Star talent or high-potential young cornerstone players. Such a package would likely appeal to Milwaukee if the team wants to remain competitive instead of committing to a full rebuild.

In today’s NBA, star players hold the keys, and the Lakers expect that if Giannis signals his preferred landing spots, they will be among the top contenders.
The appeal of the L.A. market, the team’s worldwide brand, and the opportunity to pair with Luka Doncic make a convincing pitch.
