Florian Wirtz looks to have flipped a switch in recent months, finally matching his reputation with consistent end product in the final third.
Early in the campaign he managed just three assists and no goals across his first 21 Liverpool appearances, often looking tidy but conservative in possession. Since then, though, he has exploded with nine goal involvements in his last 11 games in all competitions, scoring six and laying on three more as his confidence around the box has grown.
That upturn is reflected in his domestic numbers too, with 4 goals and 3 assists in the Premier League since December in a sharp rise from his early season return and a sign that Liverpool is finally seeing the real Wirtz.
And despite Liverpool’s underperformance compared to their pre-season expectations, the Liverpool No.7 believes he and Arne Slot’s men can still achieve great things this campaign.
Bundesliga insider BayernSpace has revealed his lofty goals for the remainder of the season:
“Florian Wirtz has informed his father and agent, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, that he is fully determined to secure a Champions League place in the Premier League with Liverpool, to conquer Europe by winning the Champions League this season, and ultimately lead Germany to World Cup glory in the United States.”
“These three milestones define his mission for the remainder of the campaign, a personal benchmark Florian has deliberately set for himself, and he is said to be working relentlessly, day and night, to turn that vision into reality. He firmly believes that achieving these objectives would naturally position him for the highest individual honour in European football, the Ballon d’Or.”
The report also adds that Wirtz shares a close relationship with Joshua Kimmich, and that he has told the Germany captain about his aims in North America in the summer:
“Florian Wirtz has also shared this vision with Germany’s national team captain, Joshua Kimmich, with whom he maintains a close and trusting relationship.:
“Within those conversations the possibility of a Champions League semi-final between Bayern Munich and Liverpool was discussed, with Florian convinced that a European night at Anfield, beneath towering floodlights and in front of a sea of red that turns sound into pressure and pressure into paralysis, would create an atmosphere so overwhelming that Bayern could find themselves mentally overrun before kickoff, as Liverpool historically draw energy from that stage.”
