Axel Disasi Opens Up On "Crazy" Chelsea Exile And The Family Connection That Made West Ham A Natural Fit

West Ham loanee Axel Disasi has reflected on his “crazy” six months training with Chelsea’s youth team.

After returning from his loan spell at Aston Villa in July, he was asked to train with the academy players. He also used different changing rooms to the first team. Asked about the six-month exile and his switch to the London Stadium, Disasi said:

“It has been really nice [to join West Ham], my situation [at Chelsea] before was a little bit crazy. For me, it is only a positive to be here; it feels great to be part of something.”

“In Chelsea, the time was a little bit crazy, but my background helped me to get through. I stayed sharp, I was working hard and always made sure that my head stayed in the right way.”

“My family helped me a lot going through this. During this period, I saw that my background helped me a lot.”

His aunt is “happy” that he joined West Ham

The 27-year-old’s move to the Irons was protracted, with it being reported that he was considering a switch to AC Milan before he eventually ended up moving across London.

Interestingly enough, though, Disasi has revealed he already had a prior connection to the club through his aunt, who lives in Stratford:

“My auntie is a West Ham fan, West Ham is her team. When I signed for Chelsea, she was happy, but also said, ‘Ah, I would have preferred West Ham.’ Now that I am here, she is happy.”

Disasi has started strongly

Many had doubts over the France international’s fitness following his arrival at the club. After all, his last competitive match came against Manchester City in April last year when he was still at Villa.

Despite the length of time Disasi spent on the sidelines, though, he has looked very sharp in his first three appearances for West Ham. He helped keep a clean sheet on his debut against Burnley, and only a stoppage-time equaliser from Manchester United prevented him from getting a second shutout in as many games.
