'Probably': Why Dominik Szoboszlai may not sign a new Liverpool contract for 'a while' - journalist

Dominik Szoboszlai is under contract at Liverpool until 2028. He has held talks over a new deal, but could hold off on signing for a while to use other clubs’ interest.

Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s best player this season, according to many names such as Steven Gerrard.

The Hungarian has proven himself to be a great utility option, impressing at right-back, on the wing and in his natural midfield role.

Amid his continued improvements at Anfield, there has been speculation about a move to Real Madrid.

Madrid have already poached one of the Reds’ top stars in the last 12 months, and losing Szoboszlai would be a big blow.

Dominik Szoboszlai could delay new Liverpool contract

As mentioned, talks with Liverpool about fresh terms are thought to have already taken place.

However, speaking to the Anfield Index, David Lynch has suggested the 25-year-old could run his contract down before agreeing fresh terms.

He said: “If you’re Dominik Szoboszlai and you’re seeing how people are driving their contracts down and using other clubs’ interest, then it probably could drag on for a little while.”

There has been talk in the Hungarian press that Szoboszlai wants £300,000-a-week, which would go against the Reds’ wage structure.

Liverpool did not sign Marc Guehi because of his wage demands, and he is now thought to be earning that sum at Manchester City.

Only Virgil van Dijk (£350,000) and Mohamed Salah (£400,000) are earning that type of money every week.

Alexander Isak, £280,000-a-week, is the third-highest paid player, but it’s easy to see why Szoboszlai may now want to be in the same bracket as such talents.

At present, the Hungarian is said to be taking home £120,000-a-week, which is by no means nothing.

However, it pales in comparison to many of Arne Slot’s regular starters, with Milos Kerkez (£75,000-a-week), Jeremie Frimpong (£100,000-a-week), and Ibrahima Konate (£70,000-a-week), the only stars earning less.

Konate could leave for free this year, so if he does stay, expect the Frenchman to get a pay increase.

Similarly, Szoboszlai probably has the right to feel, especially based on how he’s played this term, that he should now be earning similar sums to the rest of the club’s other most important players.
